It’s January again, and we all know what that means. Lots of promises made, most likely soon to be broken. Whether it’s getting in shape, kicking a bad habit, or finding some more balance in life, it’s easier to stick with our goals when we’ve got someone to help us stay motivated. Or better yet, a whole team of people with the same good intention.

In honor of National Book Blitz Month, we recommend combining a favorite New Year’s resolution, decluttering, with an even better outcome: supporting a good cause. So get your co-workers together and start dusting off your old books! There’s nothing like having a meaningful impact on your community to help build company spirit.

A man that has too many books If this is your life, it’s time to declutter!

Why Should You Fundraise for National Book Blitz Month?

The research is in. Helping others really does make us feel better. But that’s not the only benefit of organizing a fundraising event for National Book Blitz Month. There are plenty more reasons why giving back is good for employees, the community, and your entire company.

Improve employees’ self-perception and team dynamics

  • Giving back to others creates a deep sense of purpose, which makes individuals feel more valuable and relevant, leading to greater well-being.
  • Collaborating with colleagues towards a common goal, one that is not office-related, helps build morale and fosters a sense of camaraderie.

Make a measurable positive difference:

  • By supporting community causes, such as literacy programs for children, you have the opportunity to affect positive change in the lives of young people, especially those who might not have access to additional educational resources.
  • Helping libraries and afterschool programs survive and thrive creates a safe space for young children to connect, learn, and grow.

Strengthen company image

  • Kudos to you if your company is not diminishing the quality of life for your community. But it’s even better if you’re enhancing it. Giving back to the local residents will reinforce your good reputation in your community.
  • A demonstration of corporate social responsibility will go a long way when you’re trying to attract new customers. A company that gives back is trustworthy and admirable.
  • If that’s not enough, there are also tax incentives for charitable investments.

What Are Some Creative Fundraising Ideas for National Book Blitz Month?

So many books One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Now that you’re convinced, what kind of fundraisers will help employees declutter their homes AND support a good cause? Here are a few ideas:

Organize a Book Drive

  1. Start by having all your employees collect their unwanted books. Get a team of colleagues to sort through and price the books.
  2. Now it’s time to start selling. If you’ve got an empty conference room, great! If not, maybe a local cafe or restaurant wants to get involved. And if it’s warm where you are, there’s no better place than on the sidewalk to attract fellow book enthusiasts.
  3. Invite everyone, including employees from other companies, local business owners, and people from the neighborhood.

Host a Book Swap Event

Instead of a book sale, plan a book swap. Here’s how:

  1. Have a set price to participate and deduct a small amount for each book that participants bring to the swap. For example, if the event costs $10, subtract $0.50 for each book the participant brings along.
  2. If you want to draw more people to your event, consider including a raffle, also with all proceeds donated to your cause. In keeping with the theme, winners can get a yearly subscription to a publication of their choice.
  3. You can donate any remaining books from the swap to your local public library.

Plan a Literary Trivia Night

  1. Create some trivia questions with a focus on famous books and authors.
  2. Charge an entry fee for teams or individuals, with all proceeds going to your cause.
  3. Make it more interesting by having people come in costume as their favorite literary characters, with prizes for best costume.
